If you are working on a content item and leave that item without saving your changes, the item becomes locked. This will prevent someone else from accidentally making changes to that item before you are finished with it. Here is how to unlock an item.

The image below shows items that are locked.
To unlock the item, go to System > Global Checkin
Click on Global Checkin. Then go back to the content item you wanted to unlock. You will notice that all the items are now unlocked.

Either save or close an item before leaving it,otherwise the item will lock to prevent others from entering that item.
